While the NYC mosque debate garnered a good deal of media coverage in September, the proposed 2010 Koran burning by Pastor Terry Jones in Gainsville, Florida also gained significant national media coverage in September. We took a look at Pinyadda‘s news index for mentions of “Koran” or “Quran” to take a snapshot of the top online news outlets covering the controversy and when it reached its media coverage height online:
Not surprising, Yahoo!, one of the top content producing sites, published the most articles around the planned burning. The New York Times and Florida’s regional news outlet The Palm Beach Post followed close behind in producing the most content. After this, regional newspapers heavily covered the debate, including three other regional Florida news outlets. Real Clear Politics was the only niche site making the top 15 sites covering the controversy. (Data from above was pulled starting July 1-September 15, 2010.)
Another interesting finding when looking at the data, was various publications use of “Koran,” “Quran” or both. For example, Yahoo! had story headlines with both spellings “Koran” and “Quran” while The New York Times only used “Koran.” We believe this indicates that The New York Times has much stricter and more developed editorial guidelines than Yahoo!.
In lieu of the 2010 campaign primaries and since the controversy became political, we next wanted to examine when exactly the debate heated up in the political sphere. We took a look at politics articles in our index in September, showing a huge spike after the first week of the month after the first major protest occurred in Indonesia. As the controversy moved closer to the proposed 9/11 burning date, it reached its height in online news and blog outlets on September 9 during a press conference and when Pastor Jones announced “suspending” the burning. Over 1100 articles were published across top online news and blog outlets that day alone.
As for top articles, here are the top 5 most clicked articles by the Pinyadda community related to the controversy:

- Sept. 9: Rackspace Shuts Down Koran-Burning Web Site, Data Center Knowledge
