Last night’s Video Music Awards brought all sorts of celebrities out to the red–I mean white–carpet, from the cast of Jersey Shore to the Jackass crew to Lady Gaga’s pals in the US Marines. Between all the wardrobe changes and performances, tweet volumes of the hottest celebs flashed across the stage screen, adding some extra entertainment and competition to the night. We were curious to compare top celeb tweet mentions to their mentions across top online news and blog outlets.
To see what celebrities were getting the most buzz the week prior to the VMAs, we dove into our index and pulled all the articles with “VMA” in their headlines. From there we parsed names of the top 10 most mentioned celebrities:
No surprise, Lady Gaga’s predicted-to-win Bad Romance and all her other celeb appeal made her the top most covered celeb leading up to the VMAs. Kanye’s infamous show stealing from Taylor Swift at last year’s VMAs kept them both at the top, too, with anticipated Bieber fever and Bruno Mars’ live medley rounding out the top five most covered and anticipated celebs.
Next, we dove into our index for the 18 hours after the VMAs kicked off to see how the celebrity hype in online news and blog outlets leading up to the show changed:
Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Taylor Swift held their spots as the top 3 most covered celebs during and after the show across top online news and blog outlets. Bieber didn’t seem to receive as much press as anticipated (lip sync much?), but Lindsay Lohan’s brief showing garnered her a ton of press with over 40 VMA articles mentioning her in headlines.
Comparing this online news coverage to the Twitter VMA pulse, Lady Gaga remains comfortably in the lead at #1 for buzz (417 Tweets/min), but Kanye and Taylor switched #2 and #3 spots in the Twitterverse, with Taylor at 157 Tweets/min and Kanye at 130 Tweets/min.
